Picture Rescue 1.1.0 Simple retrieval of deleted digital photos By Frank Moldstad

Anybody who's ever accidentally deleted photos from a digital camera media card will appreciate Prosoft Picture Rescue 1.1.0 (MSRP $59). This Mac OS X application not only retrieves deleted images, it can also restore images from a reformatted or corrupt media card.

Picture Rescue requires a media reader such as a USB, Firewire or PCMCIA adapter to be connected, or a camera that appears as a disk device when attached. I installed Picture Rescue on a PowerMac G5 running OS 10.3.9 with no hitches. Upon being launched, Picture Rescue scanned my computer for removable media cards, finding a 16MB Flash card connected via a USB reader.

I had deleted 10 images totaling 8 MB from the card before connecting it. Picture Rescue's dialog box showed information about the card's capacity and the kind of camera used to take the pictures. It presented two options: Start, for initiating the recovery process, and Erase Card.

All images were recovered after being deleted from Flash card.

When I pressed Start, a progress bar appeared, taking about two minutes to scan the card. The Image Recovery Window displays thumbnail images of recoverable photos, or empty gray boxes or question marks for damaged or incomplete files. These files may still be partially opened with a standalone image viewer such as Photoshop. Other file types, such as movie clips and raw image formats, may be recovered without generating thumbnails.

Scanning removable media device.

There are two ways to recover files, by dragging and dropping them to a selected folder on the computer, or pressing the Recover button. Drag and drop is a new feature in version 1.1.0, and I found this simpler than opening the Recover dialog box, highlighting all 10 images and dragging them  as a group.
