DMN Newswire--2007-3-1--Over a dozen broadcasters and post-production facilities in the Asia Pacific region have recently embraced Autodesk, Inc.?s (NASDAQ: ADSK) visual effects, editing/finishing and digital color-grading products running on the Linux operating system. These Autodesk products are used for the creation of television channel branding and program packaging, as well as film and long-form television content.
New customers for Autodesk?s Linux-based solutions include China?s Beijing Television Station and HeBei Television Station, South Korea?s Arirang TV and Korean Broadcasting System, Australia?s Cutting Edge, New Zealand?s Weta Digital Ltd., Taiwan?s Deepwaters Digital Support and Thailand?s Fame Post-Production Co. Ltd.
With Linux adoption booming in Asia Pacific, Autodesk is poised to meet the needs of broadcasters and post-production facilities by offering both Linux- and Windows-based solutions. In its China Linux 2006-2010 Forecast and Analysis report, market research firm IDC estimates that China's Linux market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 34 percent from 2006 to 2010. IDC also forecasts that by 2008, Linux-based personal computers (PCs) will account for more than 9 percent of PC unit shipments in Asia Pacific.
Australia: Cutting Edge
A full-service post-production company, Cutting Edge undertook one of the biggest local systems upgrades for its facilities in Brisbane and Sydney. ?At first, we considered upgrading our Autodesk systems running on the SGI Tezro workstation, but we owned so many systems that the cost was prohibitive. When Autodesk?s systems became available on Linux, we welcomed the upgrade affordability,? explained Managing Director Michael Burton. Cutting Edge has moved two Autodesk Inferno and two Autodesk Smoke systems to Linux platforms and added another Smoke 2K on Linux. The new systems are also more space and energy efficient.
China: Beijing Television Station (BTV)
A public television network with 10 primary channels, Beijing TV Station purchased a Linux-based Autodesk Smoke high-definition (HD) editing/finishing system. Kuang Kui, Director of BTV?s Production Department, said, ?After a year?s evaluation and trial we selected Autodesk Smoke HD running Linux. The Linux platform is very reliable and stable. Its open architecture also promotes interoperability and our total cost of ownership has fallen.?
New Zealand: Weta Digital Ltd.
The Academy Award-winning facility based in Wellington, New Zealand, has moved to Linux. Senior Autodesk Flame artist Jean Luc Azzis uses a Linux-based Flame for feature film design, research and compositing. Azzis said, ?The new Flame system is very quick, which means I can experiment more and create different looks. The Flame system?s time warp feature now includes motion estimation, which works really fast.?
South Korea: Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)
One of South Korea?s ?Big Four? broadcast networks, KBS owns two TV stations and five radio stations. The broadcaster also produces sports news and episodic programming, using Linux-based Smoke and Flame systems. Smoke and Flame Artist HyunSoo Lee said, ?It is important for us to be able to process urgent requests quickly and securely. Since we started using the Linux-based Smoke, our work process has been accelerated and our systems have become more efficient, eliminating worries about the tight scheduling.?
Taiwan: Deepwaters Digital Support
The biggest HD production service provider in Taiwan, Deepwaters, has invested in a Linux-based Flame 2K visual effects system. General Manager Hung-Chi Yang said, ?Autodesk?s Linux-based solutions work faster in processing large amounts of high-definition visual effects than the older solutions running on SGI Onyx 2 workstations. They meet customers? requests for real-time playback. They also overcome the issues of high maintenance costs and lengthy downtime that we experienced with our SGI-based systems.?
Thailand: Fame Post-Production Co. Ltd.
One of the largest post-production houses in Asia, Fame is a full-service facility with 60 staff. Its post-production pipeline is based around the Autodesk Flint, Flame and Inferno visual effects systems. Fame upgraded to two Inferno Linux systems and a Flame Linux system, as well as purchasing a new Flint Linux system. General Manager Barnaby Bretton said, ?The productivity gains to the facility have allowed us to take on more work. The difference in interactivity at 2K has been the most dramatic benefit. We are currently working on two feature films and the speed of the new systems at 2K is as fast as the old systems at PAL; the difference is that dramatic.?
